He was the son of the late Alexander Macbeth of Dunfermline, Fife. He was born in 1876 and educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh. He was a keen golfer and good cricketer.
He moved to London at the age of seventeen, and eventually became a member of the Stock Exchange in 1904. He enlisted under the Derby Scheme and after time as an Officer Cadet he was given a temporary commission in the Worcestershire Regiment as a Second Lieutenant. He was posted to Egypt and attached to the Warwickshire Regiment. Soon after he was given command of an armoured car. He was invalided home with Malaria in January 1918, and had returned to business apparently cured, but had a violent relapse on 18 February 1919 and died.
