Other Infohomas Ewart Lee originally enlisted into the 2nd Dragoon Guards at Newport, Monmouthshire, in October 1914, aged 19. He remained on the Reserve of Cavalry until June 1915, when he transferred as a private to the West Riding Regiment. He sailed for Gallipoli in August 1915, where he served with the 8th Battalion. Promoted to Sergeant in March 1916, he was next posted to the Western Front, where he served from early July 1916 until May 1917, when he returned home to obtain a commission. He was gazetted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Worcestershire Regiment on 28 November 1917, and entered on the strength of the 8th Battalion. His medal index card confirms the issue of the medal for Afghanistan and notes his attachment to the Border Regiment, whose 2/4th Battalion served in that campaign. The Diary of 2/4th Battalion The Border Regiment 1914-19, records, ā€˜2 June 1919: The armoured train between Pabbi and Jamrud was attacked and partially derailed by tribesmen between Kacha Garhi and Jamrud at 00.30 hours. Corporal Murray and Private Brown of ā€œCā€ Company wounded.’ Lieutenant Lee is shown in the War Diary for that date as being in command of 12 other ranks on board the armoured train as infantry escort.
