| Other Info | Originally reported as missing on the 27th May 1918. Died age 21. Served with 'A' Company of the 1st Battalion. The Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France. Maurice Gardner was from Weston-super-Mare, the younger son of Mr and Mrs H. Gardner of "Coromandel", Milton Road, and was a keen amateur sportsman as well as being an outstanding Scholar. After the Royal Grammar School Worcester (from 1909 to 1914), he won a Demyship in Mathematics at Magdalen College, Oxford, and subsequently the Open Goldsmith Exhibition in Mathematics and Divinity, later gaining First Class Honours in Mathematics. He first enlisted in the Somersetshire Light Infantry as a private, subsequently being commissioned into the Worcesters. He was wounded in action early in 1917. |
