Other Info | Cyril Millington was born in Stourport on the 13th January 1897 and as a teenager he was a choirboy at Worcester Cathedral. He joined the 14th (Pioneer) Battalion Worcestershire Regiment (Pioneer Battalion) in 1915 and and his music talents led to him been selected for the Battalion band as a clarinet player. He moved with them in the spring of 1916 to Salisbury Plain and at Larkhill and later at Codford the Pioneers complete their training before sailing to France. They crossed from Southampton to Havre on the night of the 20th/21st June 1916 and arrived at Havre on morning of June 21st and 5 days later he found himself in front line trenches. Cyril found himself acting as a stretcher bearer. He remained with the 14th Battalion though out the war and in the later stages of 1917 he was gassed and evacuated for medical treatment and recovery. He served a total of 3 years and 268 days.
After the war he found employment as a carpet dyer but in September 1919 moved to join the Birmingham City Police Force. He married Edith Compson in October 1922 and remained in the police force until he retired in January 1951. Cyril died on the 3 March 1955.
